In summary, in the sixteen years that SeniorNet has been educating older adults on computer technology, we've learned many things:
o Seniors don't fear technology … they are not technophobes.
o Use of computers and the Internet can ease isolation
o Lifelong Learning is a key to Senior minds and health.
o Peer to peer education, small class sizes and low ratios of students to instructors - the cornerstones of our Learning Centers - do work.
o By participating in SeniorNet programs, seniors improve their self-esteem and respect for themselves.

We at SeniorNet believe that technology is a two-edged sword: either it can increase problems or it can solve them. Our goal is inclusion of the senior population in a rapidly changing world to prevent technology from becoming a problem for them. Rather, computer literacy fosters independence and reduces isolation -- an older adult who knows how to do research on-line can be an active participant in their own healthcare; and one who can make their voice heard through on-line political action, is a force to be reckoned with.

You may have heard the Internet called the "bridge to the 21st century." More accurately, the Internet is a medium, a potential, that allows a bridge, an information bridge, to exist. The world's senior populations, having witnessed first hand the events of the last century and now seeing the dawn of a new one, can help build this bridge.

Together, Japan and America's SeniorNet organizations can make sure the educational foundations of the bridge, our Learning Centers, empower the seniors of our two countries to be leaders on this bridge …truly "Bringing Wisdom to the Information Age"!
