In March and April 2000, SeniorNet collaborated with the Japan Research Institute to study on-line activity of older adults in the United States and Japan. Results showed that Japanese seniors who use the Internet are almost as active as their American counterparts in terms of hours spent on the Internet, their involvement with e-mail, and their participation in online discussions. In addition, both Japanese and U.S. seniors place strong emphasis on the need for communication with their families and friends and the need for content providing useful information. Japan is aging more rapidly than the United States due to such factors as a lower Japanese birth rate and longer life expectancies for Japanese than for Americans. As a result Japan will be at the forefront in developing political and social policies to adapt society to a large aging population, including developing an infrastructure to teach older adults to use computers and the Internet. Although SeniorNet USA is now much larger than SeniorNet Japan, we believe that due to a more rapidly aging population SeniorNet Japan will have much to teach us in the United States. By the same token, we also hope that our experiences in the United States will be valuable to SeniorNet Japan. In some small way, I hope my remarks today will be part of that process. ![]() |
