 Japan SeniorNet Presentation

【016】These one day events, in addition to information from SeniorNet Headquarters ...

These one day events, in addition to information from SeniorNet Headquarters or myself about the national programs, allow the volunteers to exchange ideas and discuss concerns among themselves. As with most conferences, the interaction between the attendees is often more informative than the planned program. These conferences get strong reviews from our volunteers, and the difficulty is finding the time and money to hold them frequently.

My second task is to help set-up new learning centers and train their volunteer group, primarily in the Southeast United States … about 6-8 per year. The week-long schedule begins with a day where I set-up all the systems, install a LAN system, test the proxy software and generally ensure that the classroom systems are ready to conduct classes.

A second day is devoted to a presentation on SeniorNet, its history, its objectives, and discussion of what the Learning Center, in particular their Center, will be doing. This will include discussions of the website, all the curriculum, and some looks at the problems and techniques in teaching older adults.

Days three and four of the week are devoted to hands on training of the volunteers. In a very rapid manner, using the same workbook they will use with their students, I will take them through the Introduction to Computers course, which will be the first one they will teach. I touch on every class session, and do at least one exercise out of every two hour segment, so that they get a good understanding of how we teach, and the detail contained in the workbook.

Finally, on the last day, we will sit down and develop their unique plan for how to get from the end of the training and orientation session to the opening days of their class, generally 6-8 weeks away. This covers setting class fees, the budget, schedules, practice teaching, student applications and much more. At this point it is very important that the site liaison attends so that decisions on responsibility are made, and where there is uncertainty, a timetable for resolution is agreed to.
