A second means to address the communication gap is through use of the website. I mentioned earlier that we have all our curricula stored on the website in a password protected area for the use of our volunteers. In addition to the curricula, we also have forums or roundtables where volunteers can discuss new curricula, classroom setup issues like the use of presentation systems, finance and budget issues, volunteer retention programs, and many more. In addition, we have so-called "white papers" written on topics of current interest. A prime example was a paper on the Y2K conversion problem …. how to find out if you had a problem, and what to do about it. Similar papers are there on printer sharing, how to evaluate presentation systems, and data and system recovery techniques.

Finally, a third program to enhance communications is our Regional Conference schedule… one day conferences for all the volunteers in a small geographic area about every two years.

The presentations include a national state of SeniorNet message; a presentation by each of the attending centers, a luncheon speaker on pertinent topics; and then breakout sessions where pertinent learning center issues are discussed. This year, I suspect most of the breakout sessions … and most of the discussions will center on the Windows XP conversion, the latest curriculum update schedule, and how to find students.
