Japan SeniorNet Presentation 【010】However, today the number one reason is... However, today the number one reason is "I just don't want to be left behind!" They see the ubiquitous "www.xyzcompany.com" in all the mail, newspaper and TV advertisements, and they recognize the world has changed. Another change has been the number of students who have computers already at home. In the early 90's, that number was about 25%. Today, that number is well over 60%, and close to 80% if you count the number who say they will acquire one during the class. This factor is important because you want your students to practice at home … they are able to retain a great deal more if they do. For that reason, every curriculum is designed so that the student can exactly duplicate what he did in class, including all the exercises by following the workbook. Each step is described in detail, plus pictures of the screen at each step of the exercise. So the three legs of our foundation triangle are very well built in Boynton Beach. Now that we examined the foundation, let's look at what we teach and how we teach it. SeniorNet's goals in our curriculum are two-fold.. First, our primary target is the true beginner, one who knows nothing about computers or technology, who doesn't even know how to program his VCR, who is afraid to turn on the computer because he might press the wrong button or key and damage it! We want to take that beginner and make him computer "literate". Originally, we defined literacy as being able to turn on a computer, type a letter or some other document, save it to a file, retrieve it, edit it, print it, and turn off the computer correctly. At Boynton Beach, we have since added "signing on to the Internet", and "reading and writing e-mail", to that basic definition of literacy. Second, for those students who have "graduated" from the basic class, we want to provide some courses designed to acquaint him with other application areas, so that he could become "conversant" with several applications. ! ![]() |
