【009】In Boynton Beach...

In Boynton Beach, the hospital gave the volunteers the responsibility to run the program entirely, and the site management went out of their way to help make the program a success. The hospital liaison to the program sits on the "Board of Directors" of the Learning Center. This ensures that any possible support needed from the hospital is quickly approved and also ensures the Center does not unintentionally violate any hospital policies. The relationship is so strong, that at its annual meeting last year, the Center contributed $5,000 to the hospital charitable fund.

The students comprise the final leg. For most of SeniorNet's existence, finding students has been the easiest task. In most cases, Centers had waiting lists of people trying to get into the program. And even the slightest mention of the program in a magazine or newspaper, generally brought dozens of interested applicants. Today, there seems to be a waning of potential students in our oldest centers, so perhaps we might have to be more aggressive in finding students.

Like most of SeniorNet, our students in Boynton Beach had a median age of 67, and we had some that were in their late 80's. Some centers in the US report that they have had students in their 90's attend classes, and who have done remarkably well. Slightly more females (54%) take classes than men. In our center, located in Florida with a large retirement population, we have a great number of married couples take the class together. The only bit of advice I give new centers on this subject is that you should separate husband and wife as far apart as possible. No matter how loving they appear when they first present themselves, one always is "dominant", and will quickly try and "help" the other if they sit too close together!!

Why do students come to us? When we first opened in 1994, the number one reason was grandchildren, either to communicate with or to be able to tell their grandchildren that they had attended a computer class. Tracking investments, recipe collecting, newsletters for their church or societies, or just writing a novel were other reasons mentioned, but nowhere close to the grandchildren!
