 Japan SeniorNet Presentation

【006】The SeniorNet web site (www.seniornet.org) is an excellent place to visit.

The SeniorNet web site (www.seniornet.org) is an excellent place to visit. It has consistently won awards from industry, magazines and government groups as the best, most informative website for Seniors. A big reason is that the content is ever changing, and responds to the feedback of those visiting the site through surveys and e-mail comments. I would encourage all of you to visit if you haven't already done so.

Today, I want to discuss some of my experiences … first as a Learning Center Coordinator (or Leader) for five years and , second, in my current role as a Learning Center Consultant and Regional Trainer. But before I get into those topics, let me emphasize one overriding philosophy that SeniorNet has about the Learning Center experience. …. It should be fun, and fun for everybody involved!! We want every student to feel that they are welcome, that they are among friends, that there is no pressure, that the pace is geared to seniors, that everyone is there because they want to be, that they will have a warm, pleasant and enjoyable experience. We try not to teach anything about bits and bytes, or any other technical details. Our approach is that the computer is like a telephone or a car … you don't need to know how it works, but only how to make it do the things that you want it to do!

By the same token, we want every volunteer teacher to enjoy the teaching experience. We want them to experience the delight when a new student first discovers how to change the font size, or edit a letter, or send his first e-mail note. After all, every student is there because he wants to be, not because he needs a grade, or credit, or because it's required to get a job. The student really want to learn what you are trying to teach, and there can be no more rewarding experience for a teacher. I am sure any teachers in the audience will agree with that statement!

Now to my experiences with SeniorNet. I first became involved with SeniorNet in Boynton Beach, Florida, when IBM sent me a letter shortly after I retired, informing me that something called SeniorNet was opening near my home. They invited me to attend a meeting to see if I was interested in volunteering. At the meeting, I stood up to get a cup of coffee at the wrong time, and they thought I was volunteering to be the Leader of the program! The rest, as they say, is history and I became the first "Coordinator".
