【005】The technology was slow and expensive...

The technology was slow and expensive… 10 MHZ computers with 640K of RAM, 2400 baud communication lines … but these pioneers persevered and thrived. So you can imagine how well our current seniors thrive now in the very fast and inexpensive world of 1.5 GHZ machines, 500MB of RAM, and T1 and cable for communications!

Unfortunately, as the SeniorNet neighborhood increased in size, and the breadth and diversity of offerings available increased, that sense of community has eroded, much as it does in a city which grows rapidly from a small town to a thriving metropolis.

From that one center in San Francisco, we have now grown to over 220 centers in the United States. We teach over 60,000 students a year and we have over 4500 volunteer instructors. Fortunately, our staff at SeniorNet Headquarters has remained small with but 14 employees, primarily focusing on membership and Learning Center support, and maintaining the web site.

SeniorNet Online can still today be accessed through AOL, but we also have developed our own website. In addition to several hundred discussion groups on an amazing array of topics, also offers education, opportunities to participate in leading edge surveys and product tests, discounts on a wide variety of books and computers. Sponsors like e-Bay, Charles Schwab, IBM, Microsoft, the former Bell telephone operating companies, and several software companies sponsor our web site as well as many of the Learning Centers. Partially our sponsors are there for altruistic reasons, like making sure their retirees have a place to learn the new technology, or that they want to be seen as a good corporate citizen to a certain community. But they also recognize that senior citizens have time, interest, and most importantly, money to buy their products. Therefore, the senior marketplace has become an important market to them.
