This current information revolution occurs amidst an unprecedented loss of the multigenerational lifestyle, sometimes called extended families, enjoyed by previous generations. In the United States, the young people of today are lucky to be raised by both of their parents, let alone by a community of parents and grandparents. This widening division between the generations results in less frequent contact and more isolation for everyone, particularly older adults.

Participation in the Internet world alleviates this feeling of isolation. In his book The Virtual Community, Howard Rheingold writes, "You can't kiss anybody online, and nobody can punch you in the nose, but a LOT can happen within those boundaries." Instead of the increasingly isolated world the naysayers had foreseen with more people at home… alone … online, the Internet is creating active communities, uniting people with similar backgrounds, interests and experiences. Indeed, we may talk about "surfing the Net", but most people today using the Internet aren't surfing. 57% of those going on the Net today go to the same sites repeatedly instead of wandering like nomads from one to the next. Like neighbors hanging out over the fence discussing the days' events, the citizens of the cyber world, called "netizens", seek familiarity at websites, including our own SeniorNet website.

The motto for SeniorNet is "Bringing Wisdom to the Information Age". All of us know that that our senior citizens have accumulated a lot of experience and wisdom in their lifetime. But with the breakup of the family unit, opportunities for intergenerational learning disappear, and lifetimes of experience are forever lost to the historical record.

Most damaging, the wisdom of a lifetime is forgotten. Until recently, only the very few, the famous, the titans of business, the world political or religious leaders, had their thoughts, memoirs etc. captured for posterity. But now we have the ability to capture the thoughts of anyone who cares to spend the time recording them. We are recapturing old photographs, some of which would have been lost forever. We are capturing their voices and their images from old home movies … again these would have been lost forever. And by participation of our elders on the Internet, contributing to forums, bulletin board and roundtables, we are capturing many of their thoughts, ideas and experiences.
