【002】Today we are discussing the process of teaching seniors the technology of computers...

Today we are discussing the process of teaching seniors the technology of computers, the Internet and communications and how to encourage them to participate. As I think about it, it is an excellent way to show respect and to honor them. I have been asked repeatedly why older adults should learn how to use computers and the Internet at all. The persons who asked me this question, themselves seniors, reasoned that the generations of Americans (and I am sure Japanese) who have retired or are retiring have managed to get along just fine without them, so why bother now?

Well, older adults need to be a part of the information revolution for the same reasons that everyone needs to be a part of it. Those left behind will become information-impoverished because government, corporations, and community organizations are turning away from traditional channels and turning to the Internet to communicate. The information-poor will also lose their voice in history, as younger and future generations look to the Internet as the definitive historical record.

Therefore, what better way to show respect and honor our seniors than to ensure that they have a way of being included in this new Information Age.

In addition, gerontologists in the United States have theorized that keeping the minds of our seniors active and productive is a way to ward off the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's disease and other diseases of the mind associated with the aging process. Certainly, learning the new technologies and the Internet, is going to provide a lot of stimulus to the mind.
