Japan SeniorNet Presentation 【001】Thank you for inviting me to participate in these meetings Thank you for inviting me to participate in these meetings. As you may have read in my biographical data, I spent the last few years of my IBM career living in Southeast Asia, where I was responsible for IBM's airline and travel agent marketing support. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about and living with the many different cultures, all of which can trace their roots back many hundreds of years. In Singapore, where I lived, the island was so small and so many cultures were represented, that one could walk down one street and be in India, and on the next street visit Vietnam, and the next might be Malay. These streets did not contain the usual tourist shops, but true neighborhood shops serving the local ethnic people. It was an extraordinary opportunity and very stimulating, especially as we learned about their history and important events by observing and participating in their religious and cultural festivities. Perhaps our biggest challenge was keeping track of all the holidays! But one thing was consistent amongst all the cultures … the reverence and respect for their elders. It is something for which this part of the world is noted and admired. Japan, especially, has long been recognized as a country which respects and honors its elders. ![]() |
