The project to form a Japanese model Senior Center has started !!
Sendai Citizens' Network for Seniors(SCNS) was established in summer of 1995 and has been working on researching a Japanese model Senior Center. History of SCNS
The various activities we have done since the establishment of SCNS - the meal cooking
and delivery service and the day care service "Hidamari" for the aged, the volunteer work
at the hospitals etc. - has shown how the role and the function of the Japanese model
Senior Center can be and put those into practice.
"The Japan - U.S. Forum on Japanese model of Senior Center" was held in August, 1997 in
Sendai city. The experimental project " Salon Wai Wai ISHINAZAKA " has been opened since
November, 1997.
Our vice president Mr. Tobukuro went on a tour to study the varied styles of the senior
centers, mostly in the west coast of the U.S. in November, 1996. In 1997, we made a group
study tour to the U.S. and we visited some senior centers in the west coast and the town for
the aged " SUN CITY "."The study group to make up a rich society so that we can enjoy aging " has discussed
various matters, including such themes as " The Worthwhile Living" and "Working", and
sorted out our own ideas such as the "LIFE CENTER (Japanese model Senior Center)."
The reports from Mr.Tobukuro Mr.Tobukuro's American Senior report and
The Japan - U.S. Forum on Japanese model of Senior Center appear in our
home page.
"The project to form a Japanese model Senior Center " was approved in a general
assembly which was held in May, 1998 and has started since August 19th, 1998.
Since the year 1999 has been adopted by the United Nations as the International
Year of Older People, our aim is to form a model Senior Center, which is not an
imitation of an American model, but rather one that will suit the actual circumstances
and needs of our community and our lifestyles.
Originally, what made us establish SCNS was the wide use of Senior Centers in the U.S.
and the lively seniors who are using that system. Of course, the U.S. also has social
problems such as the frequent occurrence of crime and income differences, as well as
history and social background that is different from Japan.
Senior centers in the U.S. also have the pending problem of the aging of their members and
so on. Therefore it isn't possible to simple follow the standard practices of the U.S. senior
centers. So the continued work of the profect team which started recently is also as
important as the previous investigation study.
We are currently using a subsidy from the "Long Life Society Development Center Foundation"
to resarch and form a Japanese model of Senior Center.
