The history of Sendai Citizen's Network for Seniors (SCNS)

| January 3, 1995 | Kahoku shimpo, popular news paper in Tohoku (north east Japan), started an articles series titled 'The setting sun doesn't set-Establishment of the affluent aging society. Setting aside the usual view point which tends to stress that seniors are the weak, it focused on ordinary seniors. Six ordinary seniors and reporters of the newspaper of the young generation covered the sories together |
| At the end of April, 1995 | "The Mission to research aging society in the U.S." consisting of representatives from leaders of local communities and volunteer groups, visited California, Florida, and Wisconsin, and researched the situation of seniors in the U.S. It was co-hosted by Sendai city, Kahoku shimpo, Miyagi Coop, the Institute of Tohoku Research. |
| May, 1995 | an International symposium titled 'Let's build an affluent aging society, the challenge from the city of trees.' was held at Sendai International Center in Aoba ward, Sendai , with 1,200 participants. Prof. James Sike (Gerontology) and Tobe Krette (former mayor in charge of welfare in Sweden) also participated in the symposium as guests. 'Sendai Appeal', which pledges to build the affluent aging society, was adopted |
| August 12, 1995 | SCNS was established. It was prompted directly by the enthusiasm of people who participated in the International Symposium and realized.

| September, 1995 | The activity of "Care port Hidamari", whose activity is to take care of people with light dementia, started. |
| October, 1995 | An exhibition of photographs by Robert capa, a photographer famous for his war photograph was held in sendai. More than 100 members of SCNS participated in it as volunteers to keep order during the exhibition. The purpose of this activity was to show the misery of war to the young generation. |
| February 1996 | Volunteer activity in hospitals started at Tohoku University Hospital and Tohoku Worker's Compensation Hospital |
| April, 1996 | Food Service to seniors' homes called "Pocket House" started |
| May, 1996 | Food Service network Miyagi was organized. It was realized by suggestions of SCNS to the food service volunteer groups. This is the start of research to provide meals to the aged.

June, 1996 The plan of the Supporting Organization, whose purpose is to build the affluent aging society through supporting activities, presented to SCNS. |
| July 25, 1996 | The Second General Assembly was held. A performance by Masakane Yonekura and his troupe, marked the one year anniversary of SCNS. |
| August 12, 1996 | One year anniversary of SCNS |
| September 15, 1996 | Participated in the ' Festival' of Sendai International Center with programs of traditional Japanese children's plays, performance of Suzume Odori (sparrow dance) and an Internet demonstration. At the Internet demonstration the SCNS Home Page was first introduced to the public.

| September 27, 1996 | The first meeting of the Supporting Organization for SCNSwas held , their activities were officially started.

| October 14, 1996 | 'Forum on Food Service in Aging Society.' hosted by SCNS was held. It was part of research activities on food service.

| October 19, 1996 | The workshop to study the Time Depositing volunteer system started. The information and planning department started its study on "Senior Net Home". Discussion about the new system including how to live in the aging society and how to build a system to support it by local communities, was held. |
